About DBT Assist
What we do
DBT Assist is an online service of the Australian DBT Institute which supports individual participants learn DBT skills through an online education portal. DBT Assist supports Mental health professionals teach DBT skills in online DBT groups and through self-paced learning. DBT Assist provides access to web-based interventions that can be classified into those that are guided (groups and individual support by mental health professionals) or those that are automated (self-paced learning with email and video prompts to assist progress through content).
The Australian DBT Institute has developed DBT programs since 2004 in locations that include Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, South Africa and the UK. Our unique approach includes using pop culture, flipped learning, journaling, group participation and educational videos to teach and reinforce DBT skills.
Our journey so far!
DBT Assist provides access to web-based DBT, DBT-TI and RO-DBT Skills. We have been continuously developing our approach with research as well as feedback of participants & clinicians since 2004.
2020 Relaunch of DBT Assist
After 18 months of development Dr. Peter King launched the DBT Assist Portal. The DBT Assist portal provides mental health professionals with a resource to teach DBT, RO-DBT, DBT-TI and Stabilisation Skills to individual clients and DBT Groups or RO-DBT Skills Classes. Our unique portal uses a range of flexible learning techniques including flipped learning, teaching skills using pop culture, teaching videos, group participation and journaling.
2013-2020 International Training Tours
The Australian DBT Institute and Dr. King spent a number of years teaching DBT and Trauma Informed therapies as well as developing DBT informed programs in South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand and the UK. This international experience enhanced our trauma informed approach and involved partnerships with Babette Rothschild (developer of Somatic Trauma Therapy), South African DBT Institute and SEL Network in Singapore.
2010 DBT Assist Founded
Due to a demand for DBT supervision and DBT individual therapy from Australian mental health professionals, the Australian DBT Institute launched a range of Telehealth services under the DBT Assist brand. Originally using Skype, DBT Assist provided resources, and supervision to DBT teams as well as therapy and supervision for individual practitioners throughout Australia.
2004 Australian DBT Institute founded
During a formal training and mentoring partnership with Marsha Linehan's (DBT developer) training company, Behavioral Tech LLC (2003-2008), Dr. Peter King and his colleagues formed the Australian DBT Institute. This partnership resulted in 12 x 2 day DBT workshops and 2 Intensive DBT workshops delivered to mental health professionals in partnership with Behavioral Tech LLC throughout Australia as well as mentoring of our clinical team from Marsha Linehan's senior trainers.
Dr. Peter King
DBT Assist Developer
Since 2010, Peter been developing the DBT Assist platform to support individuals develop and retain DBT and RO-DBT skills. He is a senior clinician with specialist training in DBT, RO-DBT, CBT, Somatic Trauma Therapy, and Mindfulness. His Ph.D. explored treatments for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder and clinicians’ training needs. He is a sought after clinicians, trainer and supervisor as well as holding positions as Adjunct Senior Lecturer with Southern Cross University and Consortium Chair of Meadowbrook and Beaudesert headspace.
Stuart Langley
DBT & RO DBT Practitioner
Stuart has extensive experience working with a range of individual difficulties including complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Personality Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, and Trauma / Stressor-Related Disorders.
He trained in the United Kingdom where he was born, and has since worked across a wide range of mental health services both as a clinician and within leadership roles, including forensic mental health, adolescent mental health and juvenile justice, drug and alcohol clinics, and multiple modes individual and family therapy. He worked and delivered mental services in Europe, Africa, and Australia.
Kelly Allen
DBT & RO DBT Practitioner
Kelly is an experienced Psychologist who is also the clinical lead of Essentia Health’s Sydney clinic and Sydney DBT programs. She is intensively trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Radically Open DBT. As part of the Australian DBT Institute’s National DBT leadership team, Kelly completed the Level 3 blended learning practitioner training program in Radically Open DBT and receives ongoing mentoring and development in DBT and RO DBT.
Kelly provides both individual therapy and facilitates skills programs in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Radically Open DBT (RO DBT).
